While new properties have all the appeal of modern minimalism and amenities, old buildings have all the character. They have been loved and lived in, and they’ve seen so much, holding onto the memories of families who have come and gone through the ages.
These places are homes, and homes make the best hotels, as you may discover when you treat yourself to a night at the Grande Roche Hotel.

The Pearl of Paarl packages have been thoughtfully curated by Grand Roche to ensure you enjoy every element of your stay in this lovely corner of the country. Each package includes one night’s accommodation for two, a four-course meal, complimentary breakfast, and other bonus perks.
Set at the foot of the iconic Paarl Rock, Grand Roche is a historic estate that carries all the charm of a time when people lived at a more leisurely pace. The setting sun casts a golden glow over the vineyards, birds chat to each other in a merry tune and trees rustle with the breeze as reminders to slow down and quiet your mind.
Before we go on, why don’t you also check out the top resorts in Gauteng?
The warm welcome at reception sets the tone for your stay. You’ll be led to one of the hotel’s Terrace Suites – a Cape colonial thatched cottage with a pretty vine-covered terrace. Inside, you’ll find a softly lit living room, a lavish bathroom with a generous tub, Charlotte Rhys products to indulge in, and freshly laundered robes waiting to be worn.
The master bedroom has all the amenities one would expect, but the highlight is the giant cloud-like bed waiting to enfold you in its covers. But try to hold off until bedtime; the grounds are waiting to be explored.

After settling into your suite, a late afternoon stroll is imperative. The farm, in the middle of South Africa’s third-oldest city, sits on 36 hectares of land that overlook the mountains and vineyards of Paarl Valley. The founders of the estate won the lottery when they landed this plot, because that view never gets old.
After a refresh, perhaps a soak in some bubbles or a sneaky nap, the Manor House summons you with promises of sunset canapés and cocktails, all included in the Pearl of Paarl package. Once you’ve processed the grandeur of the opulently decorated dining room, make your way to the lounge seating next to one of the room’s crackling fireplaces.
Then come the canapés. Delicious morsels of art, the content of which is all explained in detail but none of it is retained. The only thing that lingers are the explosions of flavour and texture created to complement the Pearl of Paarl cocktail developed for Grande Roche by international mixologist, Kurt Schlechter.
Don’t let the egg white and unusual ingredients deter you, this cocktail is superb and well worth a try.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for – the eating part – which involves a four-course sharing plate dinner served with a complimentary bottle of Under Oaks wine. For each course, you’ll choose one dish – not an easy feat if you are decisionally-challenged.
The good news is that you are unlikely to have any regrets. Everything that comes out of the kitchen, from the Cape Malay-style curry and the pork potstickers to the grilled sirloin is skilfully put together and abounding with flavour. Round of applause to Head Chef Kevin Grobler and his team in the kitchen.
It’s time to go and put your food baby to bed. It will need the rest in preparation for the breakfast feast that awaits you. Your coffee of choice, freshly-squeezed orange juice, platters of fruit, cheese, charcuterie and pastries form the first half of the spread.
The second half is the hot breakfast menu, which largely features eggs prepared every which way, with all the classic companions: sausages, bacon, mushrooms, and, and, and.
Goodbyes are always hard, but this one might hurt. One night at Grande Roche is all you need to fall in love with the gracious estate and its many attractions. If you are simply not ready to depart, the Pearl of Paarl package may be extended upon request.
For those looking to explore beyond the estate, the Cape Winelands beckons with its world-renowned vineyards and award-winning wines. Sporting types can tee off at nearby internationally acclaimed golf courses and outdoor enthusiasts can conquer one of the many trails or hikes in the area.
For something a bit more mellow, guests can explore Paarl’s beautifully preserved Main Road, lined with shops and busy cafés.
