Covid-19 and all the lockdown stages that accompanied it brought many things to the fore – both bad and good. One such concept that essentially took centre stage in the pandemic is remote work.
The rise of remote working gave birth to a new lifestyle for many employees across the globe. The aptly named ‘digital nomad’ lifestyle. For these tech-savvy wanderers, regular long-term 9-5 jobs in the office became a thing of the past.

As a result, it appears that Africa is increasingly becoming an enticing destination for digital nomads seeking to combine work and travel.
In a recent study conducted by Resume.io, a resume builder platform, a list of the most popular remote working destinations in Africa was formed with the Mother City taking the top spot, of course.
The study analysed a sample of 25 976 Instagram posts that featured the widely-used #digitalnomad hashtag after ensuring preprocessing them to ensure no spam accounts or bots were included.

Resume.io then ranked the destinations by extrapolating it from the post’s geotag or from within the post’s captions.
Thus, the top ten best African cities for remote work that have captured the online attention of digital nomads emerged.
The findings reported that Cape Town had more than twice (9 428) the digital nomad activity on Instagram than any other African destination. With our pristine mountains, glistening beaches and vibrantly diverse culinary scene, it’s not that difficult to imagine why.
According to one travel blogger ‘Cape Town allows us to live a 5-star lifestyle on a 3-star budget’. The abundance of digital nomad-friendly hotel and hostel accommodation offerings, coworking spaces and remote working-friendly cafes may also be some a pretty enticing factor.
Marrakech in Morocco and Nairobi in Kenya took the second and third spots with 4 482 and 2 009 estimated digital nomad posts, respectively.
