Prospective lifeguards can still apply during the second round of applications, which is currently open and will close on 2 October.
The swimming season commences late in September 2023 and will end in April 2024, with the high season starting on 1 December.
‘Our lifeguards are an important part of ensuring a safe and festive summer season,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health Patricia van der Ross.

‘They are there to look out for bathers and potential water hazards, components of our Drowning Prevention service. It’s a job that requires commitment and vigilance.’
Any person wishing to apply has to register for e-recruitment and complete the application form online.
Cellphones are not compatible with the application process, and applicants must use a computer with internet access to apply. This includes using a SmartCape computer at a City library.
Applicants who applied in July 2023 must not reapply.
All candidates have to pass a physical assessment where their capabilities and fitness level must be up to standard. Pool lifeguards are required to swim 100 metres in under two minutes, while beach lifeguards are tested to swim 400 metres in under eight minutes.
The criteria for becoming a lifeguard are carefully considered, and only candidates who make it through all levels of assessment are appointed to safeguard lives on the City’s beaches and at swimming pools.
‘While we receive huge numbers of applications, many candidates fall short due to not having the minimum requirements listed in the job description, incomplete applications on e-recruitment and failing to complete fitness and technical competency practical assessments, among other requirements. If you qualify, please apply for the opportunity to become part of our Drowning Prevention lifeguard contingent for the summer,’ added Van der Ross.
