CyclingSA announced that together with the team at the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC), they have established a blueprint for cycling mass participation single day and stage events to resume under COVID-19 restrictions.
President of CyclingSA, Ciska Austin said that they have worked closely with the DSAC in recent weeks to establish a way forward, and goes on to thank the teams of the Absa Cape Epic, Cape Town Cycle Tour and the 947 Ride Joburg for their input and collaboration to get the blueprints approved.
“A blueprint has been established with the help of these three major events that has not only allowed for their own events to take place, but also for all CyclingSA sanctioned mass participation events to start again.
“All events will require either COVID-19 vaccination or testing status to participate, but this is the new normal until we see the end of the pandemic,” Austin adds.
Cycling is considered a low risk sport because it takes place outdoors and is not confined to stadiums. Therefore, the blueprint was approved by DSAC with this in mind. No spectators will be allowed at any time, and all events will be subjected to access control and will be subject to checks from government on the day.
Each level of event will have to meet certain requirements to be approved and sanctioned by CyclingSA, while final input was received from government.
Meanwhile, the 2021 Absa Cape Epic will take place from October 17-24. The organisers of the race are committed to doing everything possible to ensure that this event takes place safely and successfully.

The event will not have spectators and access to race villages, water points and other official areas will be strictly controlled.
All participants and event staff must present a negative COVID-19 test before the start of the race and submit to a further antigen test during the event as an added screening measure.
Fans and supporters of the race can expect a full daily Live Broadcast that will be available on the Absa Cape Epic Facebook page and YouTube channel, as well as on SuperSport.
