As the winter winds blow their way through the chilly skies of the Western Cape, it’s the perfect time to enjoy making, decorating, and flying kites at the popular kite workshop returning to the Liberty Promenade shopping centre from 1 to 10 July 2022.
A recent study showed that South Africa has one of the lowest mental health scores in the world and that mental health and well-being have worsened during the recent pandemic. For this reason, this year’s kite workshop aims to create awareness of children’s mental health and the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their well-being.

Making kites is also a fun and healthy family activity that encourages creativity and expression. Children of all ages are invited to decorate their own kites using paints and various other craft materials provided.
- Workshops will take place from 12pm to 4pm, with 30-minute sessions daily.
- The cost is R10 per child.
- Simply register your child at the ticket booth in the centre’s Food District as slots are limited.
If you need even more enticement, participants stand in line to win one of 1o R250 gift cards by posting a photo of their decorated kite and tagging the mall on Facebook or Instagram with the #KiteArtPromenade.
Cape Mental Health Deputy Executive Officer, Carol Bosch explains: “It is important for parents to ensure that children feel supported as they grow up. There are many ways in which we can support our children to ensure that they develop good mental health.”
Some tips from the organisation:
- Talk openly about feelings in a way that children can understand.
- Follow a routine.
- Teach children healthy ways to cope with stress.
- Make time for play, get them moving, and have fun.
- Watch out for signs of mental distress.
- Talk to a professional if you are struggling with parenting.
If you feel that you need support with parenting or simply coping skills, contact your child’s school for a referral to the School-Based Support Team.
