A new boutique hotel, Gorgeous George, will be opening in the heart of the CBD this year and is the first Cape Town-based member of the world-renowned Design Hotels.

The hotel located on St. Georges Mall will open its doors in March 2019. The building is made up of two restored heritage buildings merged together to form an eclectic, art and design-focused accommodation.

Walking into the establishment, you will be greeted by an Art Deco theme, a contrast with the structure’s 1940s New Edwardian style. The hotel is a mergence of two original standing structures which have different façades, one with steel window frames and one with oak frames.

The hotel features a rooftop pool, bar and restaurant.

The international award-winning designer behind the hotel’s interiors, Tristan du Plessis, explains his choice to feature works by South African artists inside the hotel.

“We wanted to take this fantastic conjoined building that has a rich history of Cape Town and create a modern, timeless hotel using South African designers as part of the design DNA.”

The furniture and decor in the suites and main spaces of the hotel emulates chic downtown Cape Town style. Both the lighting and furniture have been sourced from David Krynauw, Gregor Jenkin, Studio 19, Douglas&Co and Dokter and Misses.

A feature piece of a crocodile swinging chair created by artist Porky Hefer and murals from artist David Brits are found throughout the interiors.

Meanwhile, an iconic work of art dedicated to the Mother City is the centrepiece of the hotel foyer. The piece by local artist Lucie De Moyencourt and is made up of 1800 hand-painted tiles placed in such a way that they create a map of Cape Town.

Guests can look forward to a top-class culinary experience at Gorgeous George; Guy Bennet, a talented chef who has worked alongside some of South Africa’s best, including Reuben Riffel, Michael Deg, will be the hotel’s executive chef.

Cocktails prepared by skilled mixologist Jody Rahme will be served at the rooftop bar which overlooks the cityscape.
