As the academic year kicks off, schools across the Western Cape welcome 108 325 Grade 1 pupils, while more than 1.1-million students return to schools across the province.

The first day of Grade 1 is often a bittersweet milestone for parents – it means their babies are now growing up, taking the first step into their 12-year schooling journey. Many Grade 1 pupils cry at the realisation they will be without their parents for the day, making it hard for some moms and dads to leave their young ones behind.

Fortunately, the Grade 1s of 2019 seem quite happy to be heading off to school.
