16 June marks a turning point in South Africa’s history. It’s a day we commemorate the Soweto Uprising, a peaceful student protest that turned violent 1976.
Youth Day is more than just a public holiday. It’s a time to celebrate the diversity of South Africa and its future generations, because as Whitney Houston exuberantly sings: I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.
As we celebrate the 46th anniversary of this significant event in our history, we’ve rounded up a few Youth Day Events in Cape Town to help you celebrate:

There’s no better way to celebrate history than by viewing some history. Selected Iziko Museums have cooked up something special for the youngsters this Youth Day by allowing free entry. Visit the Slave Lodge, one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town as you contemplate the long history of slavery in South Africa.
For something a little less sombre, gaze in wonder at the marvellous African Dinosaur section of Iziko museum, or visit Bo-Kaap Museum for a deep dive into Cape Town’s rich cultural heritage. Excludes Planetarium, Groot Constantia and Goodhope Castle.
