French photographer and master of candid photography Henri Cartier-Bresson said “Photography is an austere and blazing poetry of the real.” A creative art. Emotive. A powerful medium of expression. Photography has a way of quieting the soul, yet evoking so many strong feelings, and this is exactly how I felt when gazing upon San Dee Williams’ work writes Cape {town} Etc’s Micayla Vellai.

In a moment of scrolling, I had to take a second to stop and scroll back up again (you know that feeling, right?). Unable to comprehend how one image, one scene, can be captured so beautifully.
Speaking to the Capetonian talent behind the lens, San Dee said that she is well travelled in South Africa and abroad, and discovered her passion for photography in Canada. The lakes and colours amazed her, she recalls.
Although she didn’t have a decent camera then, her niece was kind enough to lend her one. And after taking a few shots, stepping away and observing what she captured, she was impressed with her craft.
“Nature, nature, nature, and animals, that’s what inspires me” said San Dee when asked about the inspiration behind some of her breathtaking images. She goes on to cite landscapes, the ocean, the waves, sunsets, flowers and birds on her list of favourites to gaze upon.
“With animals, I try and capture the eyes and wonder what they are thinking… When taking [photographs of] sunsets, I try to capture the best moment” San Dee adds.
She loves meandering through the seaside village of Kommetjie, and exploring the abundance of beauty it has to offer. From surfers flocking to ride the waves at Kommetjie’s Long beach to marvelling at the site of the Slangkop Lighthouse which was built in 1919, this picturesque gem has it all.
