Nicknamed the “Bay of Sleeping Beauty,” the charming seaside town of Stilbaai has attracted a host of visitors, from locals to international travellers eager to soak up the incredible beauty that this charming seaside town provides.
While it’s a popular go-to for day-trippers looking to explore the Western Cape, it’s recently seen an explosion in the number of semigrators looking to pack their bags and escape the bustle of the city.
With the pandemic proving that a work-from-home model is possible and many South Africans exhausted with the fast pace (and traffic) that many big cities such as Cape Town offer its residents, it seems residents have been eyeing a move to coastal havens such as Stilbaai.
And why not? There’s plenty that this quaint town has to offer. Located a mere 26 kilometres off the main N2 Garden Route between Cape Town and Mossel Bay and a four-hour drive from the Mother City, remote workers have the opportunity to spend their days surfing, exploring several of the hiking trails, historical sites and the three nature reserves that are located in this area. It’s a paradise for nature enthusiasts or those looking for a more slow-paced lifestyle.
According to Chas Everitt Southern Cape franchisee Charles de Kock, coastal villages such as Stilbaai provide the perfect escape as residents often enjoy a more restful and holistic lifestyle while still being closer to larger urban centres that offer shops, medical facilities and good schools.
“As a result, many of these villages have seen a bigger percentage of homebuyers seeking to become full-time residents instead of holiday homeowners, and this has boosted property demand and underpinned prices in these areas. As an example, our area specialist Jeanne Hamman has sold more than 60 homes in the past year – worth a total of over R85 million – to people who have relocated to the village permanently,” he says.
Along with having the chance to listen to the rolling waves from Lappiesbaai Beach, Stilbaai is also situated at the mouth of the Goukou River and is divided into two sections, namely the eastern section and the western side. The town offers three retirement communities, two shopping centres that include supermarkets and a number of outlets, and its own medical centre – making it a convenient location for anyone moving in from the city.
Prices for apartments are a little cheaper than you would find in the city too, with a one-bedroom apartment going for R430 000. If you’re looking for more space, a three-bedroom and two-bathroom unit with a gorgeous ocean view will cost you around R1.7 million – a steal when compared to the prices residents pay in Cape Town, as per Business Tech.
A few lifestyle estates have also been cropping up in Stilbaai which start at around R350 000 and can go up to R2.2 million depending on the size and position.
