Susu Bubble Tea gracefully danced onto the scene at a time when the world was craving a burst of joy and novelty.
Susu’s meteoric rise was fuelled not only by the revival of bubble tea, that beloved bygone era of the 2010s, but also by the cafe’s multicolour embodiment of quirky creativity, spreading its charm and vibrant interior design far and wide.

Walking into Susu Bubble Tea in De Waterkant is like entering a living colouring book. This eatery beckons adventurers and seekers of whimsy to partake in its vibrant delights with an interior design so bold it could make rainbows blush.
Every nook and cranny brims with colourful vitality, as if an artist has splashed their palette across the walls, ceiling and floors.
Cooked Design Studio, an ethical and compassionate commercial interior design studio in Cape Town with a penchant for idiosyncrasy, is the creative force behind the colourful interiors.
Mel Cook, a passionate interior and exhibition designer as well as a former project manager, founded Cooked Design Studio in 2017.
‘I love people. More so, I love how interior spaces have the power to connect them to each other, to brands, and to their own sense of wonder.’
Approaching concept development with empathy and curiosity, Mel has over a decade of design experience and has worked on a wide range of projects in both the creative and corporate worlds. Mel has received numerous awards for her work in exhibitions, having worked with companies such as Deloitte, Investec, Microsoft, Adcock Ingram, FAW and BMW. She volunteers as a co-chapter leader for Ladies, Wine and Design, a global movement that champions women in the creative industries.
When conceptualising Susu Bubble Tea, Cooked Design Studio prioritised the essence of Momo and Susu beverages: super bright and colourful, fun to make, great to look at and even more delicious to drink. They aimed to create an environment that complemented these delightful concoctions.
Thus, it became imperative to design a space that mirrored the exuberance and charm of the products themselves.
Cooked Design Studio begins every project by determining who the users of a space are and how we can use design to create a sense of connection with the brand for them. We were able to create a new fantasy world for the colourful clientele to bring out their inner child when visiting this playful space by using the brand’s logo of whiskers as inspiration.
Susu’s allure, however, extends beyond its visual symphony. Its menu, bursting with flavour, ranges from the frosty indulgence of ‘Susu slush’ to the velvety embrace of milk teas and the dance of macchiato tastiness.
