Located within a heritage building in the bustling Kloof Street neighbourhood, Upper Union is a stylish eatery serving up a modern, shared-dining concept by Chef Amori Burger.
At Upper Union, it’s all about encouraging connection, conviviality and sparking curiosity.
A place to meet, a place to explore and, most importantly, a place to spend a little more time together chatting, laughing, eating and clinking cocktail glasses.
This summer, the menu boasts an array of dishes featuring bright, light and fresh ingredients, without losing Chef Amori’s signature bold, spice-driven flavours.
Highlights include mouth-watering hints of torshi sheer, bread and butter pickles and pineapple amba. This season also focuses on inventive culinary techniques, with an emphasis on fermentation, pickling and preservation.
‘This new season is all about light, bright and vibrant flavours; it is also about our constant striving to explore and learn as much as we can. The team and I have loved delving into the world of fermentation and preservation, and I think those components really shine on this menu,’ says Chef Amori.
Highlights and staple favourites
The ever-popular kubaneh bread course remains on the menu, served with mebos, extra virgin olive oil and makhana butter.
The chef’s seasonal sharing menu introduces fresh sea bass with tiger’s milk and green papaya and ox tongue with Worcestershire gel and horseradish.
The main course features Picanha rump steak coupled with waterblommetjie and nasturtium chimichurri. Sides include homemade feta, a celery herb slaw, allium confit and salt-baked beetroot.
Inspired by childhood favourite flavours, the dessert menu features unique creations like popcorn sugar cookie ice cream sandwiches filled with corn and Frosties ice cream, as well as a classic blend of chocolate hazelnut and raspberry with dacquoise.
More to explore
The a la carte menu has also seen new additions, such as beetroot moutabal, chicken and duck pastilla and a curated selection of bonbons from Short & Sweet chocolatiers.
Upper Union serves its summer menu throughout the season, operating seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
Please note that the restaurant will be closed on 25 and 26 December 2023, as well as 1 January 2024.
For a summertime experience that’s all about discovery, creativity and community, Upper Union stands as a must-visit culinary destination this season.
