Good news for LGBTQIA+ members and allies has come to light after the Western Cape Department of Social Development revealed that millions have been budgeted to empower and protect the members of the rainbow flag in the rainbow nation. And, if you’d like to cheers to that, one of the leading wine farms in the Cape has also announced a new role in supporting the community.
In light of the Department’s announcement, funds have been allocated for various programmes with the LGBTQIA+ community in heart and mind.
The programmes are said to include protection, aid and support and are set to amount to R62 million, according to Social Development MEC Sharna Fernandez as per IOL.
The announcement came after Fernandez responded to a question by Good Party’s Shaun August, who enquired as to how the LGBTQIA+ community would be supported by the Department.
In her written response, Fernandez noted that the Western Cape’s GBV Implementation plans extend to the LGBTQIA+ community who are also deemed a vulnerable group.
Further, filling the cup of empowerment is leading winery Steenberg Farm.
Steenberg Farm is well aware of the LGBTQIA+ community’s contributions to travel, tourism and adventure. However, these desires are often met with hesitation.
