A major heatwave is forecast for the Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Garden Route area for today, prompting the South African Weather Service to issue a weather advisory against the extreme temperatures.

The South African Weather Services has advised those currently in any one of these areas to remain indoors, wear light clothing and to keep hydrated so as to curb the effects of the ‘extremely hot conditions’.

“The old and infirm must take care to stay hydrated and cool. Avoid strenuous outdoor activity, playing excessive sport and hard labour,” said The South African Weather Service.

A warning for potential veld fire conditions has been predicted for the Breede Valley, Worcester, Langeberg and Robertson due to sweltering temperatures.

Temperatures in Beaufort West will soar to a sweltering 42°C, while a maximum temperature of 34°C is predicted for Worcester. Vredendal will experience a high of 29°C and a low of 13°C.

Warmer temperatures from 32°C and upwards are expected to move through the Western Cape area covering Paarl, Malmesbury, Ceres, and Stellenbosch in the later part of the afternoon.
