Electrical appliance manufacturer Defy has introduced a new product, namely solar-off-grid powered fridges, to help with ‘the challenges of rising food prices and the ever-present threat of food spoilage due to loadshedding’.
Defy’s solar hybrid fridge can connect directly to solar panels and the electrical grid and operates on solar energy during the daytime and switching to on-grid mode when there is no sunshine, as reported by IOL.

While the fridges will be able to work ‘completely off-grid’, homewoners will have to ‘buy the solar panels and batteries’ themselves.
According to Defy’s website, their Solar-Off Grid refrigeration range seamlessly ‘integrates with solar panels, ensuring reliable cooling even during load shedding and power outages’, leveraging with a Lithium Ion Battery for backup power during night time or solar panel interruptions.
This would result in ‘up to 44% less energy consumption in the fridge’, which offers both financial savings and environmental benefits.
