Kay-Lee Mouton (14) will soon be braving the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean in an extreme open-water swim in support of endangered African penguins.
Kay-Lee, a student at Hoërskool Dirkie Uys in Moorreesberg, is taking on the 7.4km Island Escape swimming challenge from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand in December, intending to raise funds for the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre (SAPREC).

Developing a deep passion for swimming at the young age of 3 and having accomplished numerous significant swims over the years, Kay-Lee expressed her excitement at having the opportunity to take part in the Big Bay Event’s Island Escape swim in December and hopes to garner as much support as possible.
The swim from Robben Island to Big Bay, Bloubergstrand is known as one of the world’s most extreme open-ocean swims. The water is extremely cold with the presence of sharks and unpredictable sea conditions.
