21 arrests were made by the Swartland, Overstrand and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units (RSUs) in one week, between 13 and 19 May 2024 in the Overstrand and Swartland areas, according to a press statement issued by the Western Cape Government.
Along with ‘various other municipal law enforcement agencies’, as well as the South African Police Service (SAPS), 21 individuals were arrested for various crimes.

Of these 21 arrests, four were apprehended in the Overstrand municipal area, three were arrested in Mossel Bay and 14 in Swartland.
The Mossel Bay K-9 unit conducted operations in JCC Camp, Kwanonqaba Ruiterbos, Glentana, Groot Brakrivier and Calitzdorp, where arrests were made for one charge of possession of drugs and two charges for riotous behaviour.
Along with confiscating an abandoned vehicle, the unit also confiscated 450g of tik.
The Swartland units conducted operations in the broader Malmesbury, including Chatsworth, Riebeek-Wes, Riebeek-Valley, Darling and Moorreesburg areas.
These individuals were arrested for two charges of drug possession, one charge of being in possession of ammunition, one charge of being in possession of a dangerous weapon, four charges of dealing in liquor and four charges of dealing in drugs.
In addition, the units confiscated four plastic teardrops containing heroin, 47 whole Mandrax tablets, 44 packets and 51 straws of tik and large quantities of liquor.
The Overstand unit arrests included one charge of drug possession, two charges of diving in a restricted zone and one charge of being in possession of stolen property.
The unit also impounded an abandoned vehicle and a rubberduck boat while they confiscated 5262 abalones, four half Mandrax tablets, two bankies tik and one cellphone.
‘Our K9 and RSU’s continue to play a significant role in their respective areas creating safer communities,’ said Reagen Allen, Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety.
‘As the Western Cape Government, we are immensely grateful to these dedicated men and women, along with man’s best friend, for staying the course of interrupting and stopping criminal activity,’ Allen added.
