The City is offering temporary positions for individuals who possess the necessary qualifications and competencies to fulfil the responsibilities of a lifeguard or senior lifeguard. To identify the most suitable candidates based on the operational requirements of the City, a comprehensive scoring system is utilised.
The lifeguard positions are categorised into four types: beach lifeguard, senior beach lifeguard, swimming pool lifeguard, and senior swimming pool lifeguard. These positions are available on a seasonal basis. As part of the selection process, potential candidates will undergo rigorous testing.
In addition to meeting the specified criteria for the positions, all applicants must pass a mandatory swim and rescue test and demonstrate proficiency in first aid skills.
Beach lifeguards are required to complete a minimum swimming distance of 400 metres within eight minutes, while pool lifeguards should swim 100 metres in under two minutes.
Applicants must also possess a clean criminal record with no pending charges and be free from any drug use.
The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for implementing the City’s Drowning Prevention Framework. As part of this initiative, they aim to deploy over 600 seasonal lifeguards, including 340 beach lifeguards and 316 pool lifeguards, across various municipal swimming pools, tidal pools and beaches in Cape Town during the summer season.
The primary objective is to ensure a safe and enjoyable swimming environment for residents and visitors alike. The lifeguard season in the City runs from September 2023 to April 2024, with the peak season commencing on 1 December 2023.
