The private school Curro Holdings has introduced an afternoon school option called CurroPM at their Durbanville Campus which allows their high school learners the opportunity to choose an afternoon learning schedule.

Parents alike share the same sentiment that our dear teenagers are a species among themselves and for a long time we held the assumption that they’re lazy, but contrary to that belief and while there is some hard evidence and research to back up the fact that they are indeed a species among themselves which can be likened to cats, they’re not lazy.
The reason they insist on going to bed later and struggle to wake up early is that teenagers experience a natural shift in circadian rhythm and their bodys’ internal sleep clock resets due to their teen brains making the sleep hormone melatonin much later at night than kids’ and adults’ brains do which results in your teen feeling sleepy much later in the evening.
Curro has pivoted the traditional school schedule to accommodate teenagers’ crazy schedules teamed with a lack of sufficient sleep by introducing CurroPM to its high school learners who balance high academic goals with high-performance sports and cultural activities and struggle to find time for all their responsibilities.
Learners enrolled in CurroPM will follow the same enhanced curriculum and still have access to all the school facilities and activities, with the added benefit of getting the full nine hours of sleep teenagers require as per sleep research and a more relaxed afternoon school environment.
The CurroPM classes will run from 1.45pm to 6.30pm Monday to Thursday and 1.5pm to 4pm Friday with a 20-minute break. The timetable runs on a 10-day cycle with six lessons from Mondays to Thursdays and three lessons on Fridays.
Speaking to Business Insider, Riaan Stroebel, the executive head at Curro Durbanville said, “At Curro, we are always looking for new ways to reach and support our learners and have seen some exceptionally promising learners suffer from thwarted potential simply because they are put off by the current way of doing things. For them, the liberalised, yet structural approach of CurroPM is the answer to making their school journey relatable and enjoyable.”
