Collaborating with the staff at Wolfgat Nature Reserve, the Urban Waste Management Public Awareness, Communication and Education team organised an insightful tour of the Kraaifontein Integrated Waste Management Facility for Tafelsig residents.
Situated near the Wolfgat Nature Reserve, the Tafelsig community faces the challenge of illegal dumping, which not only harms the environment but also poses health and safety risks to residents.
Recognising the importance of community engagement in waste management, the Wolfgat Nature Reserve staff have been actively educating residents about responsible waste disposal.
To further enhance these efforts, the City organised the tour to provide residents with firsthand knowledge of waste management practices and their impact on the environment and community health.

During the tour, residents learned about the extensive measures taken by the City to prevent waste from entering the environment, including the costs associated with removing waste from illegal dump sites.
They also gained insight into recycling operations and the value of waste, inspiring them to participate in recycling programmes and community clean-up initiatives.
Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, emphasised the importance of community-city collaboration in waste management efforts.
‘The tour provided valuable insights that can help the community feel empowered and inspired to actively participate in waste management efforts. Together, we can create cleaner, safer areas and a brighter future for our children.’
Residents are encouraged to report instances of illegal dumping to the authorities, providing photos or details that can aid in identifying and penalising perpetrators.
