At the heart of the ‘Ani-Pals’ Education programme lies the belief that compassion for animals is not only essential for their well-being but also serves as a foundation for nurturing empathy and kindness in children.
Through interactive puppet shows endorsed by the Western Cape Department of Education, the SPCA’s education team brings lessons on animal welfare principles and responsible pet ownership directly into classrooms across Cape Town.

The programme focuses on teaching children the five basics of pet care, including providing food and water, shelter, exercise, preventative veterinary care and sterilisation.
Accompanying curriculum-aligned workbooks, available in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa, enable teachers to reinforce these lessons in the classroom.

In 2023, the ‘Ani-Pals’ programme reached an impressive 66 schools, positively influencing over 7 600 young minds and providing free sterilisation services for 742 domestic animals.
By targeting Grade 3, 4 and 5 learners, the SPCA aims to demonstrate the responsibilities of pet ownership in a simple and accessible manner, empowering children to make informed and morally responsible decisions about their health and their environment.
