According to Independent Media, Stellenbosch University received 88 085 applications for first-year spots in 2024 but can only admit around 5 600. The faculties of medicine and health sciences, arts and social sciences and economic and management sciences received the most applications.
Residence spaces are limited, accommodating only 2 280 students. In light of this, two new residences will add 400 beds by mid-2024.
‘The university supports students in finding suitable accommodation and will continue to engage with the relevant entities, including the Student Representative Council and NSFAS, to work towards long-term solutions in finding suitable accommodation,’ said university spokesperson Anél Lewis.

UCT will welcome 4 500 first-year students from 92 841 applications, with Health Sciences being the most sought-after faculty.
‘At UCT, we believe education is not just about earning a degree. Certainly, a certificate helps to open doors to a career, but what is most important at UCT is what people do with what they learn. We believe the most important goal of education is to unleash human potential and build a fair and just society,’ said UCT’s interim vice chancellor, Emeritus Professor Daya Reddy.
UWC is expecting 4 650 first-year students, with the most popular courses including law and nursing.
Gasant Abarder, UWC’s marketing and media manager, commented, ‘The university has already commenced with registration and is well-prepared for the start of the academic year.’
UWC has made additional arrangements with private accommodation providers for its 6 000 applicants who still require housing.

CPUT anticipates about 9 000 first-year students.
‘CPUT is a well-oiled machine with regard to the start of the academic year 2024. We are prepped and ready to welcome the new and existing cohort of students,’ asserted university spokesperson Lauren Kansley.
She said CPUT has one of the highest rates of placing students in residences and some 40% of its students get residences.
‘We have prioritised student housing and over the past few years, we have exponentially increased our student residence offerings,’ Kansley said.
