The annual Liberty Promenade Next Generation Musical Showcase is a highly anticipated event on the Western Cape calendar, attracting talented learners who showcase their dancing, singing, musical, rap and other talents, in order to win funds for their schools.
This year, the competition has attracted a remarkable number of 21 primary, high and special needs schools from Cape Town, setting a new record for the project.
Competing learners will showcase their talents at the event at the Liberty Promenade Mall on Saturday, 21 October 2023.
Participating schools stand in line to win their share of R60 000 for their schools. This can be used to upgrade facilities or purchase educational resources. Furthermore, selected participating learners and teachers will receive additional prizes.
This campaign, proudly presented by Liberty Promenade, and powered by MTN, is now in its twelfth year as part of the mall’s social responsibility initiatives.
Each year, the Next Generation Musical Showcase is centred around a different theme, designed to inspire learners to incorporate optimism, creativity and innovation. The 2023 theme is ‘Mental Health x Superheroes: We’re in this together’ which needs to be reflected in the performance.
Learners are encouraged to highlight what the theme means to them, portray their understanding of and support for mental health awareness, what it looks like, how to get help, and convey an encouraging message to those who are struggling with mental health issues.
A panel of judges will select the top performing schools. The winning primary and high schools will receive R20 000 cash and runner-up primary and high schools will win R10 000 cash.
The competition was open to all schools in Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. The 21 participating schools are: Alpine Primary, Beacon School for LSEN (learners with special educational needs), Caradale Primary, Cascade Primary, Highlands Primary, Hyacinth Primary, Imperial Primary, Intshayelelo Primary, Jamaica Way Primary, Lantana Primary, Lentegeur Secondary, Lentegeur School for LSEN, Montagu Drive Primary, Portland High, Rocklands Secondary, Summerdale High, Spine Road High, Wavecrest Primary, West End Primary, Woodville Primary and Yellowwood Primary Schools.
‘Every year, the young participants of the Next Generation musical showcase never cease to amaze us, as they leverage the platform to share their views on issues that affect them and their community in the most creative ways,’ said Brenda Bibby, General Manager of Liberty Promenade. ‘Their vitality, innovation, positive outlook, and exceptional talents leave a lasting impression. We’re confident that the 2023 edition will be equally incredible, and we can’t wait for this year’s event.’
