Say goodbye to those action films and crime documentaries and embrace a world of magic and wonder instead. The great thing about Disney movies is that there’s something out there for everyone to enjoy. The internet is still mourning the death of Mufasa 27 years later. And when I’m not reading Children’s literature, I’m spending the day exploring the world of Disney.
I’m a big kid at heart, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Micayla Vellai, and my shelf is packed with all things Disney – Frozen, The Lion King, The Jungle Book, Cinderella… What I’ve come to realise over the years is that these movies offer so many valuable life lessons, many of which have remained with me.
Here are five of my favourite Disney movies that’s taught me a thing or two about life:
Finding Nemo – Just keep swimming
Life is full of obstacles and there’s just no escaping the challenges that’ll head your way next. But when it tries to get you down, remember to “just keep swimming”. This quote has inspired me to never give up when difficulties arise, and if you’re familiar with the movie, you’ll know that Marlin doesn’t give up trying to find his son either after Dory shares these three powerful words with him. Even though it might not seem possible to overcome a certain situation, let’s keep swimming and push through everything meant to destroy us.
Beauty and the Beast – Don’t be too quick to judge according to appearance
Let’s face it, we’re all guilty of judging people too quickly. We take one look at someone on social media, and our mind is made up, without even taking the time to dig deeper. We can all learn a thing or two from Belle, who took the time to get to know the Beast, and ends up falling in love with him.
Aladdin – Be yourself
When Aladdin pretends to be everything that he’s not, things don’t work out the way he intends it to. Don’t try to be someone else to fit into society’s ‘box’. Be who you are meant to be. Be true to who are and live your life with authenticity.
Alice in Wonderland – Take a leap and explore different opportunities
If you feel trapped and not sure what to do next, remember to take a leap and explore your options. Alice was curious enough to explore Wonderland, and break away from her normal routine to enjoy a crazy world of magic and tea parties! So don’t be afraid to follow your dream, who knows where it’ll lead to!
Toy Story – Friendships are valuable
Toy Story has so many important lessons to bear in mind but one that stands out most is the power and beauty of true friendship. When times are tough, the gang comes together to help each other out, and nothing is more heartwarming than having a friend to lean on. Just like Woody and Buzz stick together during the tough times, find your own squad that’ll support you no matter what.
