Capetonian families are in for a treat with the captivating child-friendly show, The Heart of the Ocean, which will run at the impressive TheatreArts in Observatory from 24 February to 3 March.

Baba Yaga Theatre from Denmark brings The Heart of the Ocean to Cape Town, performing for the first time in South Africa, as part of 11 productions of TheatreArts’ new energising off-the-grid season of shows, Theatre in the Dark. This season aims to investigate the effects of loadshedding on South Africa and the production process, allowing artists to create shows using alternative light sources.
Jori Snell of Baba Yaga Theatre, a freelance performer known for creating work for young audiences, pays tribute to the forces of nature and the imagination in The Heart of the Ocean. In this one-of-a-kind story, a girl and a pelican take audiences on a joyous journey into the Costa Rican jungle in search of the golden seed known as ‘The Heart of the Ocean.’

Jori combines her training in physical theatre, dance, directing and teaching, butoh, and visual arts to create a personal language that captures the attention and emotions of young audiences. She created The Heart of the Ocean, in which the girl meets jungle creatures and befriends everyone! The Heart of the Ocean is a collaboration between creators Jori Snell (creator, performer, and scenographer), Sandra Pasini (artistic consultant), and Antonella Diana (scenographic consultant).

The Heart of the Ocean, suitable for children aged 3 and up and families, promises adventure with bright colours, movement, and music composed of fragments by Stephan Micus, Voices of the Rainforest, Peter Broderick, Aphex Twin, Brendon Bussy, Zorn, Bruno Coulais, Metropolitan Klezmer, and L’Orchestra Di Piazza Vittorio.
