There’s a unique get-up that resides in South Africa that has protested the test of time and fashion rules – rocking to the beat of its own frikkadel. To the confused onlooker from foreign lands who has never experienced the sight of the ‘boere kit’, it might seem startling. However, if you are able to offer the wearer a brandy and coke and some biltong, the final addition to the outfit will certainly be a smile.
It’s not exactly the sort of ‘fit most people would associate with a boyband, but Jan Jan and Jan beg to differ – and have the music videos to prove it.
The ‘Jans’ rallied together after Donovan Goliath (the Real Goboza host) shared a photo of the ‘Backstreet Boers’ in 2019. They were just a couple of models strutting the colours of the khaki kingdom back then, until Goliath’s Twitter post about them saw him ask his followers to ‘name the rap group’. This was the joke that sparked an idea.
They actually did become a group, and one set on creating music and visuals that tannies and boere-kit lovers will certainly adore, and the rest of Mzanzi can appreciate as proudly South African.
The trio, their short-shorts and two tannies are back again with ‘Two-Tone Lyf’, currently #21 on YouTube’s trending music.
Grab a brandy and coke, put your veld skoene up and prepare for content that truly, you’ll only find in South Africa.
