Finding inspiration can seem like an uphill battle once your creative juices start to run dry. Even though this happens to the best of us, it can become extremely frustrating to try to get ‘back on track.’ Thankfully, the world is full of awesome ways to help unleash your creativity and get that fizzle back.
But there’s no single magical method that works for everyone though. For example, while others hop onto their phones for inspiration, scrolling through thousands of feeds on Instagram, I prefer having a little detox writes Cape {town} Etc’s Micayla Vellai. An abundance of content seems to leave me frazzled and clutters my mind, whereas it might have an opposite effect on the next person.
Here are five ways that can help get your spark back:
Listen to a podcast
Nothing screams ‘inspiration’ more than reflecting on someone’s personal journey, and the great news is that the web is buzzing with inspirational podcasts just waiting to be heard. I often keep a notepad nearby in case an interesting quote or idea pops up that can be implemented in my own life. So grab your headphones and have a good listen. Who knows, it might just be what you need to get those creative juices flowing again.
Make time for fun
The proverb wasn’t lying when it said “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Finding time for fun within your busy schedule is crucial to reset and recharge. For some, this means spilling some paint onto a canvas and for others, it could mean tackling some DIY projects around the house. Whatever sets your mind at ease is what you should be leaning towards.
Get physical
Head out to Sea Point Pavilion for a lovely, brisk walk or grab your exercise mat and set up a space where you can smash a sweaty workout. According to Harvard Health, exercise changes the brain in ways that protect memory and thinking skills so get your body moving!
Major detox
While you might think browsing through social media is the best way to get inspired, sometimes all those feeds and content can clutter your thoughts and leave your brain spinning. Give your mind some breathing room and embrace boredom. Forbes cites Neuroscientist Alicia Walf, a researcher in the Department of Cognitive Science who says that it’s critical for brain health to let yourself be bored from time to time.
Jot down your ideas – the good and the bad
You can never have too many ideas! And writing down those that can turn into a masterpiece and those that need to make its way into the trashcan can help to keep that momentum going. Make some time for spontaneous writing where you jot down as many ideas as you can think of.
