Zeitz MOCAA presents ‘Self as a Forgotten Monument,’ the first solo exhibition by self-taught French artist and photographer Mame-Diarra Niang, offering a decade-long survey of the artist’s innovative lens-based work.
Curated by Storm Janse van Rensburg and Thato Mogotsi, Mame-Diarra Niang’s prolific and abstract artistic practice spans photography, moving images and immersive audio-visual installations, defying conventional categorisation and assumptions about identity, geography and specificity.

Niang’s work is an intricate journey to construct a constantly evolving self-portrait.
The exhibition comprises two main trilogies of her works: ‘The Citadel,’ featuring series like ‘Sahel Gris’ (2013), ‘At the Wall’ (2014), and ‘Metropolis’ (2016), and ‘Remember to Forget,’ consisting of series like ‘Call Me When You Get There’ (2020), ‘Léthé’ (2021), and ‘Sama Guent Guii’ (2021).
These series challenge conventional documentary and portraiture photography, reflecting Niang’s inward-looking process.
Niang’s immersive room installations, specifically adapted for Zeitz MOCAA, offer visitors a profound, personalised experience deeply embedded in the artist’s unique perspective.
