WHATIFTHEWORLD, a renowned contemporary art gallery based in Cape Town, is currently hosting a captivating group exhibition titled ‘Oh So Quiet.’
Curated by Akshar Maganbeharie, the exhibition offers a thought-provoking visual meditation, delving into the intriguing intersections of abstraction, materiality, shape and elements of figuration.
The exhibition opened on 15 July and will run until 26 August, providing art enthusiasts and visitors ample time to immerse themselves in the diverse artworks on display.
The title, ‘Oh So Quiet,’ draws inspiration from Icelandic singer Björk’s song ‘It’s Oh So Quiet,’ released in 1995. Just as the song zigzags between softness and exuberance in its sound, the exhibition explores the nuanced spaces of abstraction, socio-historical contexts and affective materiality.
Curator Akshar Maganbeharie explains how the song’s structural elements resonated with the artworks showcased in the exhibition, forming a poetic connection between sound and visual expression.

Through an array of mediums such as sculpture, painting, printmaking and collage, the participating artists transcend conventional artistic practices to explore their unique methods of construction. ‘Oh So Quiet’ delves into questions of cultural identity, home, displacement and the socio-historical impact of violence on the processes of meaning-making.
The exhibition presents a visual symphony where each work reflects the individual practices, processes and personhood of the artists. However, their creations are also influenced by their interactions and relationships with one another, leading to a rich and interconnected display.
