What do you give someone who already has everything they need? This is often a thought that rushes through my mind whenever I start searching for the ‘perfect gift’ writes Cape {town} Etc’s Micayla Vellai. While we have no say on what anyone should do with their birthday gift, and whether they should use it or not, there’s nothing more heartbreaking when you find out that those luxury bath bombs have been sitting on the shelf for ages.
Yes, I’ll be the first to admit it – gift giving has become really difficult with so many options out there. Shoes, cool Tees, bath sets, electronics… where to start and what to buy?
But nothing says “I love you” more eloquently than a ‘love box’, or at least my rendition of it. So what is a ‘love box’ in my opinion? Well, quite simply a box that contains anything thoughtful – it doesn’t have to be lavish or over the top, but it should tell a story.
If a loved one recently knocked their toe against the side of the cupboard, along with some minor bleeding (ouch), you could pop a box of plasters in the ‘love box’ as a humorous gesture to show that you care.
I’ve become quite obsessed with this form of gift giving in recent months, and the great part is that you can unleash your creativity – anything goes!
I recently gifted a family member with the classic ‘love box’, bought a few items, printed a few labels and voila! The box consisted of:
- 1 inspirational book attached to a label that reads “Read me when you need inspiration.”
- 1 Kit Kat chocolate with the label that reads “Eat me when you need to take a break.”
- 1 scarf – “Wear me when you’re freezing.”
- 1 printed voucher with my cell phone number attached to it that read – “This voucher is valid for one month only. Call me when you need someone to talk to. Terms and conditions apply.”
Pop on a cute bow and Bob’s your uncle! It was a great idea to express how much I care and the recipient of the gift really felt loved and cherished.
Perhaps this idea can help add some spice to gift giving. From poems, to DIY creations, there are no limits!
