The art of drifting is traditionally done by rapidly disengaging and re-engaging a car’s clutch to upset the grip of the rear wheels, then intentionally oversteering and countersteering.
If you already knew that or if your interest is piqued, make your way to the heart of the city centre this weekend as one of South Africa’s greatest motorsport shows returns to the Mother City after a four-year hiatus.

Motorheads are in for a revving treat as the much-loved DRIFTCity will see the iconic Grand Parade transformed into a 3000-metre-squared drift arena with a time-attack obstacle course where 30 of the country’s best will battle it out on Sunday.
Promising to be an adrenaline-pumping, high-octane event under the historic backdrop of City Hall and The Castle of Good Hope, DRIFTCity will be the quintessential Sunday Funday destination for motorsport enthusiasts and the whole family too.
Watch with awe as South Africa’s top drifters finesse the technical course with Vin Diesel-like techniques requiring a combination of speed, smoke, angle and timing, going head-to-head until the DRIFTCity Champion 2023 emerges.
While drifting is undoubtedly the main attraction, the event will also feature a lifestyle exhibition area where SMME exhibitors will showcase their industry-related products, along with live entertainment, a food village, go-karts and a kids’ fun zone.
To rev up the adrenaline-fuelled event even further, custom cars and motorcycles will be on display; there’ll also be sound demonstrations, spectator drift ride-alongs and Meguiars SA is on board this year for the Custom Car Show segment at DRIFTCity, which promises to be epic.
The event is set to take place on Sunday, 24 September, with gates opening at 11am.
Tickets are available at Computicket from R150 for general access standing, R280 for unreserved grandstand seating and R400 for VIP treatment including a grandstand ticket and access to the competitor pit area for a full view of the action as well as a ‘pit pass only’ bar and lounge area.
