On Saturday, 1 600 performers took to the streets of Cape Town to celebrate individual creativity, cultural diversity and community empowerment.
Inspired by the theme “Afr’energy”, this year’s parade embodied the sense of reinvigoration that is being felt across the City after the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cape Town Carnival is a non-profit organisation, and this parade allows it to give a voice and visibility to many communities while also empowering Cape Town’s youth.
Cape Town Carnival and its volunteer performers bring the people of Cape Town, South Africa, as well as any international visitors, to an event that is free to anyone who wants to watch from anywhere along the route.
The event’s organisers posted the following message to social media:
“In the times of difficulties that we face as a nation, we strive to create an event that helps to focus our energies on positivity, social cohesion, and community upliftment—celebrating what we can do with what we have.”
The message continued, “We want to create something magical in the face of difficulties! In the build-up to the event, we invested in creating job opportunities, developing skills, and aiming to boost tourism in our beautiful Cape Town for local businesses.”
