Every year, the Cape of Good Hope’s Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse – one of the many un-caped heroes transforming the lives of animals in need – celebrates his birthday by giving back to a cause close to his heart.
This year, he’s dedicating his birthday initiative to a recently rescued dog named Toby who escaped the clutches of animal cruelty but now has a long and hard journey to a full recovery ahead of him.

According to the Pieterse, Inspector Jeffrey Mfini immediately sprung into action over the weekend, following distressing reports of neglect.
‘It was alleged that Toby harmed a cat and was subsequently punished by his owners through starvation, confined to a small alley beside their home,’ he explained. ‘This act of cruelty is now being addressed through criminal prosecution, thanks to the SPCA’s intervention.’
An emaciated Toby, with a body score of 1/5 and starvation anaemia, was brought under the care of the animal organisation. Here, he was immediately put on a veterinary treatment plan that will include a specialised diet, parasite control and the administration of fluids and meds to manage his condition.
‘He’s weak, tired and very sick,’ said the organisation.
The SPCA added that his condition was so severe that he had to get a blood transfusion to replenish his red blood cell count and restore his bloodstream’s oxygen-carrying capacity.
In an update yesterday, it was said that Toby was ‘finally well enough to enjoy a good bath’ but still has a long road of rehabilitation in store.

‘He is fighting hard to live and our hospital team are fighting hard to save him,’ said the animal organisation.
As part of the SPCA’s rehabilitation efforts and Pieterse’s birthday initiative, a Back-A-Buddy campaign was launched for Toby.
‘Toby’s resilience is inspiring, but his journey to recovery is just beginning,’ said Pieterse. ‘He deserves a chance at a new life – one filled with love, care and freedom from suffering.’
Pieterse added that the initiative was able to raise over R45 000 last year, which funded many successful rescue operations and recovery stories.
‘In celebration of my birthday, I’m asking you to help make a significant difference in Toby’s life and the lives of countless other animals… This year, let’s aim to match – or even surpass – that amount!’
The campaign, which started three days ago, has already managed to raise R37 230 of the R45 000 goal.
‘Please consider making a donation to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA in honour of my birthday, which is on 18 May,’ urged Pieterse. ‘Your generosity will not only support Toby’s recovery but will also ensure that the SPCA can continue their critical work.’
