One of the Eleanor Murray Residence’s eldest residents, Dulcie Rathbone, affectionately known as Aunty Peggy, is in desperate need of a new wheelchair.
101-year-old Aunty Peggy was injured in a slip-and-fall accident a few weeks ago, resulting in a fractured femur. Despite her incredible resilience and determination in her recovery, she now finds it difficult to move around without the assistance of a wheelchair.

Denise Vigus, an administrator at the residence, informed the People’s Post that, after the accident, Rathbone was promptly taken to the hospital, where her cracked femur was successfully repaired. Following a week of hospitalisation, she was discharged, but since then, her mobility has been significantly affected.
Vigus admires Aunty Peggy’s independence and spirit.
‘She is recovering quite well. Aunt Peggy is such an amazing woman and so strong. She still wants to do things for herself, so a wheelchair is much needed,’ Vigus said.
Aunty Peggy’s 101st birthday was celebrated in May of this year, and she has been an inspiration to everyone at the residence. She enjoys going for walks and engaging in exercises, activities that have played a significant role in maintaining her vigour over the years. However, the current situation has made these activities almost impossible without a proper wheelchair.
The residence has been temporarily renting a wheelchair to aid Aunty Peggy’s mobility, but this arrangement is not sustainable in the long run due to the added monthly expense.
To ensure her continued independence and well-being, they are now appealing to the public for support. Anyone who can donate a new or second-hand wheelchair is kindly requested to come forward.
Vigus explained that it’s essential that the wheelchair be of a suitable size, ranging between 14 and 16 inches, as Aunty Peggy is relatively small in stature.
If you wish to contribute to the purchase of a new wheelchair, donate one or know someone who can assist, please contact the Eleanor Murray Residence at 021 448 2560.
