The festival kicked off on Thursday, 22 June in Cape Town with Milisuthando, a feature film that explores the legacy of Apartheid and the future of South Africa. The film recently made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, announcing up-and-coming South African filmmaker Milisuthando Bongela.
Many of the festival’s featured films are co-productions between African and international filmmakers. The international co-productions delve into gender-based violence, the use of social media in Africa, child solders, war crimes, social welfare grant experiments and multi-racial punk music of the 1980s Apartheid era.

This year, the festival will showcase 54 films that explore the human condition. Alderman JP Smith, the mayoral committee member for safety and security, says the City of Cape Town has supported the Encounters festival for more than a decade due to the value that the platform brings to filmmakers.
‘We commend the Encounters organisers who continue to think outside the box to bring the film industry together. The City plays an important role in supporting the Encounters Film Festival as the industry faced testing challenges when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and required organisers to push the boundaries as creatives.
‘Encounters has proven itself a resilient event and we look forward to continuing our support to enable increased growth of the film industry in our city.’
The festival is airing films at two locations in Cape Town, namely the Labia Cinema in Gardens, and at the V&A Ster-Kinekor in the V&A Waterfront.
