Cape Town is set to become a meeting point for young leaders from across the globe as the One Young World Summit returns to South Africa in November 2026, Cape {town} Etc reports.
The international gathering will bring more than 2 200 participants aged 18 to 35 from over 190 countries to the Mother City for three days of discussions on some of the world’s most urgent challenges.
Scheduled for 4 to 6 November, the summit will put youth leadership, social change and economic progress in the spotlight, with Cape Town providing the setting for conversations that extend far beyond South Africa’s borders.
The event is being held in partnership with Absa, continuing a shared focus on supporting young people who want to make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.
A global gathering with a South African setting
The return of the One Young World Summit to South Africa comes after three years of the international gathering taking place overseas. Its arrival in Cape Town brings a diverse group of emerging leaders together in a city with its own complex history of inequality, transformation and social change.
For local audiences, the summit offers an opportunity to look at youth leadership through a South African lens. Young people are not simply the leaders of tomorrow; they are already part of the conversations shaping communities, economies and public life.
Bringing representatives from more than 190 countries together also creates space for different experiences and perspectives to meet. While the challenges facing communities vary, the summit will focus on issues with international significance, including climate justice, peacebuilding, equity, health, technology and human rights.
These are subjects that demand more than discussion alone. They raise questions about how leadership can translate ideas into practical action and how young people can contribute to lasting change.
Why the 2026 summit carries added significance
The gathering takes place in a particularly meaningful year for South Africa, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Uprising.
The uprising remains an important part of the country’s history, associated with young people challenging the injustices of apartheid. Its anniversary adds historical weight to a summit centred on youth leadership, social justice and transformation.

That connection gives the Cape Town gathering an additional dimension. Conversations about the role of young leaders will take place against the backdrop of a national history in which youth activism helped shape the country’s struggle for change.
It also offers an opportunity to reflect on what leadership means across generations, from confronting injustice to building more equitable societies.
Business, politics and humanitarian issues on the agenda
The summit will bring together emerging leaders alongside influential voices from business, politics and humanitarian sectors.
Its programme will address a broad range of issues affecting communities around the world, from climate justice and access to health to human rights, peacebuilding and technological change.
The involvement of Absa as a partner also places business alongside wider conversations about social and economic progress. The summit’s focus extends beyond individual achievement, highlighting the potential for young leaders to contribute to change across the continent and internationally.
For Cape Town, hosting a gathering of this scale will put the city at the centre of an international exchange of ideas, experiences and perspectives.
