The Department of Transport and Public Works has issued a statement alerting motorists to the closure of Clarence Drive (the R44) between the Grill Shack (km 53.5) and Steenbras Dam Mountain Pass (km 56.5) from 6 February until 21 February 2023 for emergency slope stabilisation repairs.

The road will be closed from 8am to 6pm every day except for Sundays, with a stop-and-go in place between 6pm and 8am during construction. During closures, access to the Grill Shack will only be possible from the Rooi Els side.
“Heavy rains on 11 and 12 December last year caused the slopes above this section of the R44 to become unstable. The slope stabilisation repairs will be done by Civils 2000 (Pty) Ltd. and are scheduled to be completed by 19 March 2023.”
The scenic Clarence Drive is a popular route between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els in the Western Cape. Clarence Drive was treated as a single-lane road during the festive season for safety precautions. Now that the holidays are over, the work to stabilise the slope has commenced.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes where possible.
