Scheduled from 25 November to 14 December, the event attracts a global lineup of 18 riders, including the young Italian champion Lorenzo Casati, who aims to defend his title.
South African talents Luca Ceruti, Jason Van Der Spuy and Joshua Emanuel will compete alongside international athletes from countries like Brazil, Columbia, England, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
Renowned for its stunning jumps and flips, the event showcases the skills of the world’s top kitesurfers.
Alderman JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security, highlighted Cape Town’s role in the event’s success, citing the city’s scenic coastline, consistent winds and dynamic ambience.
‘The City is thrilled to support this event, bringing together some of the world’s top kitesurfers, who showcase their athleticism, creativity and the sheer joy of being out on the water. And of course, the city itself plays a key role in the event’s success with its stunning coastline, steady winds, and vibrant atmosphere. It’s the perfect backdrop for such a high-energy, adrenaline-fueled event,’ he said.
The competition relies on wind and swell conditions. Spectators, typically numbering around 8 000, gather on the beach, watching the colourful kites dance against the backdrop of the sea.
Athletes’ performances are judged on their three highest-scoring tricks.
