Tidal pools along the Atlantic Seabord are undergoing urgent maintenance repairs thanks to the City of Cape Town’s Coastal Management Branch, in conjunction with the Recreation and Parks Department.
These tidal pools will therefore be closed to the public for several days to allow the maintenance repairs to be completed.
Recreational tidal pool goers are asked to use alternative pools or make use of the nearby beaches in the meantime.
Work at the Camps Bay tidal pool began on 28 September 2022 and is almost complete thanks to favourable weather.
The repair schedule:
- Saunders Pool: 10 to 28 October 2022 – improve the access walkway and seal the pool wall.
- Maiden’s Cove: 31 October to 11 November 2022 – seal the pool walls, repair cracks, and replace each of the valves.
- Milton’s Pool: 14 to 30 November 2022 – repair of large cracks in the pool wall, removal of valves, and repairs to the access staircase.
Graaff’s Pool is not part of the current schedule but will be evaluated as part of a capital refurbishment programme.
The City of Cape Town says its planned maintenance repairs are necessary “to improve the experience for all of those using the tidal pools, and importantly, to prolong the design life of these assets” but will attempt to finish its repairs earlier if possible.
