The Met Gala saw a myriad of gorgeous, wild and downright confusing (to put it mildly) pieces on Monday evening. Given that the theme was In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, the tenacity for creative tugs of inspiration was well arched.
There are a few garments that have the world talking, whispering about, and sighing at, but we’ll get to those.
A stand-out piece for me personally has to be Simone Biles’ ‘three-in-one’ piece.
Humbly named, the Beckett Fogg and Piotrek Panszczyk co-designed creation saw fashion house Athleta sparkle like never before. As in almost 40kg of Swarovski sparkle.
The dress took roughly 6 650 hours to make and 100 people. The finishing time? 4am on the Sunday morning before the Met Gala, as Panszczyk expressed per Vogue.
If there was ever a time to show the world that a woman can be both an incredible athlete and the belle of the ball simultaneously, Simone lit up the clock.
“How do I feel in the dress?” It’s definitely heavy, but I feel beautiful, strong and empowered,” said Simone as per Vogue during her final fitting.
The three-in-one titling comes from the nature of the garment’s deconstructibility. Once the Swarovski gown skirt is removed, a mini dress is revealed as well as a glittering black cat suit, decorated to look like stars in the night. Aptly, the black suit also seems to pay some sort of homage to a gymnast’s unitard. Since Biles is one of the world champions in gymnastics, it was a natural thinking point for design.
As for some other looks that spoke to people (for a variety of reasons), let’s take a gaze:
Billie understood the assignment. Through and through.

I love fashion’s royal duo, but I’m skeptical about the giant quilt. I suppose they don’t call him Babushka Boy for no reason.

One of the most underrated looks by far. Emily Ratajakowski ladies and gentlemen.
