According to the latest quarterly crime statistics released by the South African Police Service, the city of Cape Town has become a hotspot for carjackings.

The Harare and Nyanga police stations recorded the highest number of incidents between July and September, the second quarter of the fiscal year 2023/24.
The stats further indicate that a total of 114 people were carjacked in Harare and 82 in Nyanga.
With 81 reported cases during the same period, Protea station in Johannesburg, Gauteng, was the third most likely location to have your vehicle hijacked.
Gauteng and the Western Cape police stations had the top 10 positions of the top 30 stations list for carjackings.

It had six of the top ten stations, while the Western Cape had four.
Gauteng accounted for 16 of the top 30 carjacking stations.
For the reporting period, Protea police station saw a 120% increase in carjackings, while Moroka police station, ranked fourth on the top 30, saw an 80% increase.
South African criminals prefer sedans, hatchbacks, and coupés, with police recording 2,841 hijackings between July and September.
Car thieves prefer bakkies and panel vans, with 1,878 hijackings during the same time period.
During this time, two trucks weighing more than 3.5 tonnes and 15 buses were also carjacked.

Carjackings decreased in four provinces: KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Limpopo, and the Western Cape.
During this time, however, the number of truck hijackings increased dramatically in KZN, the Eastern Cape, and the Free State.
From July to September, 48 trucks in KZN were hijacked, 18 in the Free State, and 60 in the Eastern Cape.
