Three bodies, two of which are bodies of children were found following a shack fire in Cape Town’s Samora Machel near Philippi.
Cape Town police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said fire brigade crews were deployed to Daffodil Street in Heinz Park earlier on Thursday morning.
“The circumstances surrounding the shack fire this morning at around 6.00 am at Daffodil Street in Heinz Park, Samora Machel is under investigation,” says Van Wyk.
“After the fire was extinguished by the fire brigade, three bodies were discovered. It is unknown how the fire started,” Van Wyk concluded.
According to local media, the City of Cape Town recorded the highest number of township fires in the Western Cape in 2021, with over 2 200 fires in informal settlements across the province, reports Africa News
Cape Town alone recorded 1978 fires.
Authorities at the time stated that approximately R1.3 billion was set aside to improve the conditions of informal settlements and the health of its residents by 2024.
