Here in Cape Town, we love our sushi. In fact, sushi was the most ordered food by Capetonians on the popular takeaway app, Mr.Delivery last year.

Now, as any diligent sushi-lover knows, all-you-can-eat buffets are not just an ‘option’ when it comes to the way of sushi. They are a test of your sushi-loving status and willingness to indulge in your money’s worth.
As divine (and cost-effective) as these buffets can be, they are not for the faint of heart. Anyone who has had to receive a pep talk from their friends to finish their plates and avoid paying for what is not eaten can attest to this.
And sometimes, determination can go a long way – all the way to the hospital in fact. This was the case for one woman who had an ‘all you can eat gone wrong’ experience.

Daniella Shapiro pushed past all obstacles in the name of sushi and saving.
32 pieces, some other food items and a desire to eat her money’s worth of $50 (roughly R766) all contributed to Miss Shapiro ending up in the hospital the following morning. Shapiro had awoken with pain in her stomach and chest, and deep breathing was also a problem, she expressed.
Mercury or food poisoning? A kidney infection? Users were hot on the case questioning why this happened after Shapiro posted a TikTok about the ordeal. However, the culprit turned out to be Gastroesophageal Reflux disease, AKA an intense case of acid reflux, which led to several days of recovery.
Her word of advice? She won’t quit eating sushi, but she’ll certainly listen to her body next time.
