You no longer need to journey into the winelands or invest in a WSET course to taste delicious wines and receive tutelage from a wine expert – however wonderful the first two are. Instead, it’s now possible to sample a variety of excellent wines during a wine Masterclass, all from the comfort of the Mother City. Snacks included.

Cape Terroir is a new venture started by Mathieu Labaki, a Frenchman who brought his extensive wine-maker’s wisdom from Bordeaux, Alsace and Champagne to the Cape in 2002. Just over a decade later and Mathieu’s passion for South African wines led him to start his own wine consultancy.

His Masterclass will take you on a tour of MCC, white and red wines. While you taste, Mathieu goes through the basics of wine making and also teaches you how to look at, smell, taste and describe each wine. The class is as much interactive as it is informative, and questions are welcomed. Mathieu creates a relaxed environment in which it’s easy to feel comfortable to ask those burning questions you were always too shy to ask for fear of appearing ignorant!

As well as the two-hour Masterclass, Cape Terroir offers wine route tours and can also organize private wine-themed events. Classes can, by request, be held at any location – in a private home or even at any winery.

The Masterclasses are currently held every Tuesday at Dorrance Winery, Heritage Square. Class times run from 4-6pm. During summer, classes will be held twice a week and run from 5-6pm. A two-hour tasting costs R490 and includes the tasting of six wines and nibbles.
