My first visit to Spur is vividly engrained in my memory: Whose isn’t? We didn’t eat out often so this treat would be one for the books. So much so that it made its way into my morning daily news in primary school, there were ooohhhs and aahhhs all round and the pride swelled from within. An outing to Spur has always been a highlight.
I remember the smell of fresh leather booths, high-glossed wooden tables and a menu with so many choices it took at least 15 minutes to decide on a burger and a milkshake. Fast-forward 35 years and Spur is still synonymous with bringing out my inner child: I still smell the fresh leather booths, glossed wooden tables, and I still take my time deciding what I should order. Even though I am going to order my regular – sizzlin’ sirloin steak prepared medium, with a side of delicious mushroom sauce, crispy onion rings and chips.
After a 6 month lockdown, wallets are a little thinner, but don’t let that stop you from creating more Spur memories. They have cleverly devised a meal option to suit your pocket and satisfy your tastebuds. Until October 11, you can enjoy a 200g Steak (Rump or Sirloin) for only R79.90 – let’s keep in mind that they serve only the best Class A cuts, which are matured for 21 days to enhance the flavour. Further to this, you can upsize your meal to a 300g steak for an additional R30, add a sauce for R15,90 which is seriously great value for money – and include a refreshingly good Heineken® 0.0 or Heineken® for R23.90.
It is a build-your-own-meal option, and depends largely on how much you want to pay for your meal. Best of all, it’s great value for money if you consider that even without the extras you can still indulge in a steak, grilled to perfection, with chips and their world-famous onion rings for under R80.
It truly is amazing that after all these years, Spur has the very same effect on my children. They enjoy good-old-fashion fun in the play area meeting new friends and making their own memories. And if this year has taught us anything, it is to live in the now and to indulge in the simpler pleasures in life.
