Starting as a veggie box scheme in 2003, Organic Zone became a store in 2008. Known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse organic offerings, Organic Zone offers its customers an extensive range of organically grown produce, groceries, personal care items, and artisanal baked goods.
The store is also renowned for grass-fed meats, free-range poultry, eggs, raw pet food, and deli items like ghee, yoghurts, fermented foods and cheeses.
The Organic Zone kitchen produces a popular range of ready-made meals, snacks, and pre-prepared fruit for smoothies.
Owner Allister McGregor emphasises the commitment to control ingredients for premium options without compromising freshness and flavour. ‘At the heart of the Organic Zone shopping experience is organic and local first. We’ve been committed to that principle since the beginning, and the strong connections we’ve developed have helped us come through some gruelling times.’
He notes that the challenge lies in sourcing enough organic produce, especially fruit, due to the limited number of organic growers in South Africa.
‘If available, we purchase it. However, the scarcity of organic produce reflects the reality of the relatively few organic growers in the region.’
‘If we are unable to source organic, we buy the most sustainable alternative from our community of farms.’

Organic Zone supports local farmers through Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS), which aid farmers in obtaining organic certification and creating fair opportunities for smallholder farmers.
The company sees itself as a community service, having played a role in helping local producers bring minimally processed, nutrient-dense foods and eco-friendly products to the market.
‘Organic Zone customers are knowledgeable collaborators, influencing our product decisions through feedback and requests,’ says McGregor. The store enjoys loyal customer support, offering a friendly atmosphere and a diverse selection. Customers can even enjoy organic coffee and healthy snacks while shopping.
Looking ahead, McGregor hints at exciting plans, making Organic Zone the go-to place for all things organic. ‘Right now, we’re concentrating on making Organic Zone the best place to come to for all things organic; there are very exciting, creative plans for the future in the pipeline. Watch this zone.’
