I’ve always been a fan of taking some time to do something cute for myself by exploring the leftover products in my kitchen to create the ultimate facemask. Save some extra pennies and try to not eat these delicious but effective homemade mask recipes!
Hydrating chocolate dreams
Let’s get the most tempting to chow out of the way first. Chocolate is not only tasty, but our skin appreciates it once in a while too. Stress is identified as one of the few culprits that cause wrinkles and the breakdown of collagen. A study found that cocoa reduces the level of stress hormones, and gives us that lekker glow!
What you need:
1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
1 egg yolk
1 tablespoon of refined coconut oil
Mix all of the ingredients until you get a thick paste, apply the mask evenly on your face and neck. Leave the mask on for 20mins, then rinse with lukewarm water.
Honey, put some oatmeal on your face!
For those of us on the more oily side of life, this mask works wonders. Oatmeal and honey, the dynamic duo, presenting us with an array of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. This ensures smooth, oil-free skin.
What you need
Half a cup of oatmeal
2 spoons of organic honey
Grind your oatmeal to form a powder, add two teaspoons of honey and mix until it forms a smooth paste. Lather your skin and neck with the mask, leave it on for 15mins, then rinse your skin with cold water.
Going bananas
Whether it’s in a smoothie or on your face, we love bananas! What makes this fruit even better for your face is, it compliments every skin type. It has an abundance of nutrients like potassium which hydrates tired skin, and zinc to fight acne-causing germs.
What you need
1 Banana
1 Teaspoon of orange juice
1 teaspoon of plain yoghurt
Whip up your banana, add orange juice and plain yoghurt. Apply the mix to your face and let it sit for 15mins, rinse with cold water.
Curry me, baby
I love curry so much, I put it on my face. Jokes aside, turmeric is a key ingredient in my facemask routine. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but has a long list of benefits for your skin. This list includes reducing inflammation, decreased hyperpigmentation and wrinkle treatment. Let’s get into it.
What you need
1/2 Teaspoon of turmeric
1 Tablespoon of organic honey
1 Teaspoon of yoghurt
Mix all of the ingredients to form a paste, layer it evenly over a clean dry face. Keep it on for about 10-15mins, then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
Side note: Turmeric could temporarily stain your face, rinse with milk or oil. Don’t let that stop you from trying this mask, it’s amazing!
Tropical kisses
I enjoy having papaya for breakfast but never knew my face would enjoy it too. Papaya contains the enzyme papain, this little fella acts as an exfoliator and removes dead skin cells. This in return will give you the summery glow we all need in winter.
What you need:
1/2 papaya
1 egg white
Mash half a papaya in a mixing bowl then whip one egg-white until frothy. Add the whipped egg to the papaya, and add one spoon of honey to the mixture. Apply the mask to a clean dry face, and leave it on for 15mins. Wash the mask off with lukewarm water.
