Pretty Njapha, a senior nurse at Melomed Mitchells Plain Private Hospital, became a hero when she assisted a pregnant patient in delivering a baby in the hospital’s parking lot.
Ntombizodwa Zuzani, the second-time mother, had reportedly been experiencing minor back pain for a few days prior to the incident last Thursday.

According to IOL, Zuzani was busy preparing her first child for school when she felt an increase in pain and the need to use the restroom.
Her water broke on the way to the hospital, and as she entered the parking lot, she encountered Pretty Njapha, a Melomed Mitchells Plain private hospital senior nurse.
According to Melomed Group Marketing Manager Shameema Adams, Nurse Pretty Njapha was on her way out of the hospital on her lunch break when a man approached her, requesting assistance for a woman who was about to give birth in a nearby car.
She discovered the woman in the car was giving birth.
‘Njapha quickly assessed the situation, calmed the mother down and helped her deliver the baby within 15 minutes,’ Adams told IOL.
The mother named her new baby boy Nhlanhla, which means ‘lucky’ in English.
According to Adams, only one nurse was involved in the baby’s initial delivery, and Melomed Mitchells Plain Trauma staff were then called to cut the umbilical cord and transport her to the maternity ward for further treatment.
Adams has reportedly said that both the mother and the baby are in good health.
‘The mother has expressed her deep appreciation for the swift response and assistance provided by our nurse, who was on her lunch break at the time,’ said Adams. ‘She is amazed to have given birth to her baby in the car in our parking lot, surrounded by our qualified Melomed staff.’
According to Adams, the hospital is grateful to have been given the opportunity to serve the community once more, and the recent incident is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to the needs of the people, even during lunch breaks.
‘Our team of registered nurses is highly skilled and equipped to deliver quality care at any time and in any setting,’ she told IOL.
She added, ‘We are dedicated to continuously improving the quality of care we provide to our patients, and we remain committed to delivering exceptional healthcare services to all.’
Adams thanked the team for their exceptional work ethic and for upholding the nursing pledge.
