A group of senior residents of Kewtown in Cape Town recently finished a workshop aimed at boosting their self-esteem and fostering a sense of belonging. The workshop was led by Margo January from Sharehope and was initially conceptualised by the Kewtown Women’s Circle.

As per People’s Post, January explained, ‘The need for community healing and weaving the various NGOs together, an all-inclusive session was envisioned by Cecilia Alcock and Norma Medell from the Kewtown Women’s Circle, and they invited me, the seniors from Blossom Seniors and members from the broader community to attend the training.’
Invitations to the event were sent via the seniors’ club and directly to community members through WhatsApp and phone calls.
‘The seniors are sometimes excluded from training as most of the training in our country is aimed at people 18 to 35 years old,’ January noted.

Alcock highlighted the transformative impact of the workshop, stating that it has provided the older participants with renewed hope and preparedness to address familial challenges. She emphasised that no senior should ever feel isolated or alone.
The event concluded on 5 October at BABS Hall and featured discussions on distinguishing between true and false thoughts, as well as the tools for practising forgiveness.
January summed up the experience, saying, ‘With these new insights, we could then plan how we shall take action and by when to bring about a change in the relationship with ourselves and the healing in our relationship with others and our broader community.’
