Back, step, back. And forward, twirl and stop! I am killing this dance routine, I thought to myself, while attending a media dance class at Jazzart this week. I realised just how out of shape I am and also how easy it is to get into shape, if I attended these weekly classes. Not a bad way to avoid traffic in Cape Town.

The Jazzart Dance Company offers a series of exciting evening dance classes – for the whole family and all shapes, sizes and fitness levels. The patient instructors carefully choreograph routines using important muscles to provide fitness while allowing people to express their innermost emotions through the art of dance.

“When we say we welcome everybody we mean just that,” says Ananda Fuchs, Jazzart dance teacher, who together with the artistic director, Sifiso Kweyama has been teaching beginners and those with a bit of experience for some years.

There are kiddies classes too, held on a Saturday morning.

Fuchs believes dance to be an incredible discipline that can be learned at any age. “We take it easy (to start with), almost anyone can benefit from one or two classes a week,” she says.

According to Kweyama, the professional teachers utilise the fluidity of choreography to enable one to capitalise on beautiful movement, and this focused exercise can “invigorate the dancer’s energies and interrogate their inner connections”.

Benefits of Jazzart dance classes include building core strength, firming muscles without bulking up, improve balance and co-ordination, losing centimetres and kilos, stepping out of your comfort zone while learning something new, improved mental health and flexibility, increasing energy levels, meeting new people, and expressing yourself like never before.

Classes take place at the Jazzart studio R552 at Artscape on:
Mondays from 5.30pm – 6.45pm for beginners
Tuesdays from 5.30pm – 6.45pm for intermediate/advanced dancers
Saturdays from 10am – 11am for kiddies and continues for teens from 11.15am – 1pm.

Classes costs R80 per adult and R70 per child. Packages are also available at R350 for five classes, R650 for 10 classes and R720 for Saturday classes per term. To book your lesson email [email protected] or call on (021) 410 9848.
